Martino pens novel
Township native Alfred C. Martino has had his second
novel, "Over The End Line," published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt this
week.
Set in the township, "Over The End Line" tells the story of Jonny Fehey and his best friend, Kyle Saint-Claire.
Kyle is everything Jonny wishes to be: a star on the
soccer field, a straight-A student and king of Millburn High School’s
social ladder. Jonny unhappily accepts his position on a lesser rung,
until he scored the go-ahead goal in the county soccer championships,
and it looks like he can make it into the popular crowd.
But at the victory party, a classmate is raped and
Jonny’s world begins to unravel. His friendship with Kyle is tested to
the breaking point. Sports action and a misguided sense of justice
combine in a suspenseful tale of popularity and entitlement – and an
ending that Jonny never saw coming.
Martino’s debut novel, "Pinned," was published in
2005 and received numerous honors and awards, including the American
Library Association’s Best Books for Young Adults and Popular
Paperbacks for Young Adults nominations; Junior Library Guild
selection; Capitol Choices "Bookworthy Books for Children" nomination;
Quills Award nomination; and a Kirkus Reviews "Book of Special Note"
selection.
"Pinned" has also made the summer reading lists for hundreds of schools around the country.
Martino was born and raised in the township and
graduated from Millburn High in 1982, where he was a member of the
school’s soccer team and captain of the wrestling team. He is a
graduate of Duke University and The Marshall Graduate School of
Business at the University of Southern California.
Martino is currently living in Jersey City and working on his third novel.
